Five works well because the work divides without anyone idle. One person reads the statements aloud, one keeps the timeline, one sorts the evidence on the table, one argues against whoever the group currently suspects, and the fifth floats: fetching a document, rereading a page nobody trusts, opening the hint envelope when the table agrees it is time. Nobody has a job so small that they drift off to the kitchen. Taking a suspect role on top of that is allowed with one condition: the host reads the solution, so the host must never be the culprit. In practice you read the host guide first, learn who did it, and then pick a suspect who did not. Play that character honestly through the rounds, question the others, protect your own secrets, and fill in a ballot like everyone else while letting the guests' votes decide. Ask the five of you two questions. Would anyone rather not play a character? One honest yes points to a case file, because a kit cannot carry a reluctant suspect and a case file does not ask anyone to perform. Is there an obvious sixth? If a name comes up in ten seconds, invite them, buy the kit, and run it as written. If both answers are no, the deciding factor is the host.
