What is in the file, for the parent asking
The recommended age is fourteen and up. The characters are adults and fictional, and no violence is shown: there is a victim, a set of documents and an investigation, not a scene. Nothing is mimed, no improvisation is imposed and there are no forfeits.
What fills the three hours is the evidence: photographed documents that contradict each other without saying so. For teenagers that is the right level of demand, because you win by reading carefully rather than by being the loudest. The four files are on the murder mystery kits page.
Why sixteen-year-olds take to it
The secret, first. Each private sheet gives what the character knows, what they may conceal, and the exact limit of the permitted lie: you may deny a purchase, you may not invent a witness, a route, a key or a document. That makes bluffing possible without making it absurd.
Then the personal objectives: a declaration to deposit and a request two named partners may sign, worth up to three points and scored apart from the investigation. It is negotiation, and at sixteen people throw themselves into it.
Which file for a group of teenagers
For eight to twelve, a kit. Hollywood Noir and Murder at the Royal Casino have settings this audience recognises instantly, a 1950s film studio and a 1927 Paris casino, and their exhibits are very visual.
For a smaller group, or if some guests would rather not hold a character, a cooperative case file: no roles, no host, one to seven investigators. Operation Blackout suits them well: a city in the dark, hospitals on backup power, nineteen exhibits, two to three hours, sixteen hints in four tracks.
The parent as host, or not
The host does not play a suspect. They read the guide beforehand, release the exhibits at set minutes, answer for characters nobody is playing and read the reveal. The job needs preparation, not authority.
A parent does it perfectly well, and so does an older sibling or the friend who organises everything. If the guest of honour would rather the adults stayed out of it, the cooperative format removes the question: there is no host to appoint and nothing to keep secret.
What to skip
Skip the costume pressure. Nothing in the file requires one, and announcing a dress code turns a yes into a maybe for half the guest list. A single detail is plenty if the group wants one.
Skip public casting too. Deal the packs yourself, quietly, and give the culprit's pack to someone who will enjoy the responsibility rather than dread it. And keep the whole thing optional: a guest who wants to sit and read the exhibits without a character costs the evening nothing.
