The cipher case from 1943
The Enigma Code is the pick: Bletchley Park, 14 March 1943, Operation Kestrel. Ten exhibits, five real cipher puzzles, about two hours, seventeen pages to print, one to seven investigators.

Cooperative, so nobody has to host
There are no roles and no host. Everyone is on the same side, everything is available from the start, and nothing is sealed. Nobody has to know the answer in advance, and nobody has to perform anything.
That matters for a family afternoon, because the alternative format needs one person to sit out, read a guide beforehand and keep a secret all day. On this particular Sunday that is usually the wrong shape.
A family of four or five as investigators
Split the exhibits, read in silence for ten minutes, then say what you are holding before swapping. One person keeps the sheet of times, another the table of people: both are printed in the file, along with a conclusions report.
With ten exhibits this case is compact, so the work is depth rather than volume. Expect one puzzle to stall the table for twenty minutes and then fall all at once, which is the part people remember.
If ciphers are not his thing
Take a case with no decoding at all. Vanished in Paris is pure cross-checking: a starred chef disappears, twenty-four exhibits, no cipher, three to four hours, thirty-one pages.
Or Operation Blackout for something faster and more modern: a city in the dark, hospitals on backup power, nineteen exhibits, two to three hours, sixteen hints in four tracks so a stuck table can move without anyone giving the answer away. Both are $39.
What to have ready
Pencils, an eraser and plenty of scrap paper, which is not optional for this one: the five ciphers are worked by hand and people will make mistakes and start again.
Print A4 single-sided at 100 percent, or tick fit to page on US Letter. Clear a table big enough to spread ten exhibits and three working sheets. And if you are buying it ahead as a present, note that the code waits indefinitely until first used, then stays valid one week from that first opening rather than from the purchase, so nothing is lost by ordering early.
If he would rather everyone held a character than all worked together, the other format is the printable murder mystery kit: six to twelve players, about three hours, and one person who hosts instead of playing. For a Sunday afternoon, though, the cooperative case is usually the easier sell.
