Print before you go
Everything is printed at home, because rentals do not have printers and the nearest print shop will be closed. Print A4 single-sided at 100 percent, or tick fit to page on US Letter.
For a kit, print the notice, two pages per character you expect to deal, and all the exhibits. Print a couple of spare character packs: the guest count always changes. For a case file, print the whole thing, seventeen to thirty-seven pages depending on the title. The files are on the murder mystery kits page.
Saturday night: the kit
Six to twelve players plus a host who does not play, about three hours, $39.90 whatever the head count. Crime Aboard the Orient Express suits a house full of people: a 1935 locked-room case, fifty-six pages, thirty exhibits in four binders, search tokens for a still-closed exhibit of the current act.
Set a firm start time and say it twice. The twenty minutes of silent reading at the beginning are load-bearing, and at a rental somebody is always still at the store.
Sunday afternoon: the case file
The other format is easier on a tired group: no roles, no host, nobody hiding anything, one to seven investigators reading the same documents. Nothing is timed, so people can drift in and out without breaking it.
Operation Blackout runs two to three hours with nineteen exhibits and sixteen hints in four tracks, which means a stalled table can move without anyone giving the answer away. The catalogue is on the detective case files page, from $39.
Guest counts that keep changing
This is where the printed format earns its place. A kit holds twelve character packs, and the notice says which to deal at six, eight, ten or twelve. Somebody cancels, you remove two pages; somebody extra arrives, you deal a spare pack.
The only floor is six players. Below that, do not run the kit: reassign a core role to a supporting player if you can, or move the evening to the case file, which plays at any number from one to seven.
The portal, and the signal at the rental
The printed pages are the game, but the host's guide and the reveal live online, opened with the personal code that comes with the order. If the house has poor signal, have the host open the case file portal before leaving and read the guide then.
The code waits indefinitely until first used, then stays valid one week from that first opening. Open it a day or two before you travel and the window covers the whole weekend, including Sunday's case file hints. Four doors close together at expiry: entering the code, the page itself, the download and the answers, so do not open it a month early.
Frequently asked questions
Can we run two different games in one weekend?+
Yes, and they suit different days: a kit with roles for the Saturday night, about three hours for six to twelve players plus a host, and a cooperative case file on the Sunday, which nobody has to run.
What if the rental has no printer?+
Print everything at home before you leave, including a couple of spare character packs. A4 single-sided at 100 percent, or fit to page on US Letter. The nearest print shop on a holiday weekend will not help.
What if the guest list changes on the day?+
A kit holds twelve character packs and the notice says which to deal at six, eight, ten or twelve. Remove two pages for a cancellation, deal a spare pack for an arrival. Below six players, switch to the case file.
