Why it works across generations
Because nothing depends on what you already know. Every fact needed is in the exhibits, so a fifteen-year-old and a sixty-year-old start level, which is the opposite of a quiz.
Each private sheet also names three useful conversations with other characters. That gives a guest a concrete reason to go and talk to a relative they see twice a year, which is often the real point of a birthday like this one.
Which file suits the table
Crime Aboard the Orient Express is the natural pick: a 1935 locked-room case on a luxury train, fifty-six pages, thirty exhibits across four binders, search tokens for a still-closed exhibit of the current act. The setting is familiar to everyone in the room without anybody having read anything.
The Cursed Manor is the other easy one: a manor in November 1887, a dead man behind a locked door, three keys for one cabinet. Gothic atmosphere, entirely rational solution, no ghost anywhere in the file.
The host, for whoever would rather not play
There is always one guest who would rather organise than perform, and the host's role fits them exactly. They know the solution, release the exhibits at set minutes, answer briefly for characters nobody is playing, settle the signed agreements and read the reveal.
It is also the only seat from which you see the whole table work. Give it to someone who likes telling a story, not to someone who dislikes games, and ask them to read the guide before the day.
As a gift, and the week that follows
A file makes a workable present because nothing is shipped and nothing expires on a shelf. The recipient gets a personal code that waits indefinitely until first used, then stays valid one week from that first opening rather than from the purchase.
